We are a non-denominational group of individuals and organizations that have partnered to help meet the needs spiritually, physically, socially and educationally in the name of Jesus Christ. The History of Solid Rock Missions
Our history and our story goes back much farther than 1992. The following information gives you a condensed version of out history. It also gives you an idea of where we have been and where we are going.
The Vision
In the 1980s, Jim and Dorine Smith were serving as missionaries in the Dominican Republic. The church was well established and the Smiths worked with the
leadership to help meet the need of constructing new churches. That changed to school buildings. Through their work, they saw a definite need for improved healthcare for the poor. As God began to develop this vision, He was also working on two young Dominican doctors,
giving them the very same vision. Shortly after that, they were introduced to each other. And that is the start of the start of the vision of a clinic to serve the poor in the San Juan area.
The next need was for funds to build this vision. The Smiths went back to their friends in the United States to ask for their help. The help came both financially and physically. Work teams from North America went down to help build the clinic. Medical equipment from the US arrived and the clinic opened its doors in 1989. Medical teams went down to help provide services. Dominican doctors were also recruited to provide regular care. Along with the clinic, a guesthouse was built to feed and house the visiting work teams. The clinic made a definite change in the health of Dominicans in the area. Children were becoming healthy. The infant mortality rate went down. Medical and construction teams continued to come. And God was blessing this ministry.
The clinic was meeting the physical needs. They also were meeting spiritual needs as well. A local pastor presented the Gospel message daily in the clinic’s waiting room. Lives were being changed physically and spiritually. What was next?
The Vision—Part II
God gave
the Smiths a new vision. The children were now healthy. The next need was an education. However, there was no school. That was the vision. And God worked. Construction was started in January 1995. The school opened its doors in September 1995 with 170
students in 4 grades. Each year more grades and more students were added. More classrooms were added as well. Vocational training was added to the curriculum. And more students were added. The first graduating class celebrated their accomplishments in 2001. The school now has 900 regular students and 140 adult education students. And more classrooms are being built.. Operating funds for the school come from individuals like you.
